It is under an Aquino regime that our aging military assets were massively modernized using only high-quality arms provider, such as those coming from Europe which boasts advanced top-quality hardware that is at par with other superpowers in the region most particularly China. Especially at the height of China’s growing military presence in the region and its continues encroachment of waters within our Exclusive Economic Zone. President Aquino amended the Republic Act no. 7898 originally initiated by Fidel V Ramos to Republic Act No. 10349 which extend the modernization program for another 15 years with an initial budget of 75 billion pesos for the first five years in order to continue modernizing all the branches of the AFP.
According to this article published by Max Defense. The recent delivery of advanced weapon systems was AgustaWestland AW159 Mk. 220 Wildcat naval combat helicopters that were acquired under the Antisubmarine Helicopter Acquisition Project, and the Hanwha Defense Systems KAAV-7A1 amphibious assault vehicles acquired under the Amphibious Assault Vehicle Acquisition Project. Both projects are part of the Horizon 1 phase of the Revised AFP Modernization Program (RAFPMP) initiated by the Aquino administration.
“Itong anti-submarine warfare will (help the frigates against submarine attacks) kasi yun submarine ang magpapalubog ng mga barko (These anti-submarine helicopters will help the frigates against submarine attacks because submarines sink ships). So this will help in the defense of the frigates,”- Philippine Navy
According to some sources. The said weapon systems should have been delivered in September last year, but was hampered due to logistical reasons and also by request by the weapons manufacturer.
Wildcat is the latest generation of multi role helicopter specifically procured to operate from the Frigates and Destroyers of the Royal Navy.
Wildcat takes the very best features of the existing Fleet Air Arm Lynx and gives it extra punch.
The Lynx Wildcat (rather than just plain Wildcat to avoid confusion with the legendary WW2 Naval fighter) might look like its predecessor and possess many of its outstanding characteristics, but it will be leaps ahead in so many ways.
The engines are considerably more powerful providing much improved performance when operating in hot environments and at high altitudes.
AgustaWestland AW159 ‘Wildcat’ helicopter is an improved version of the Westland Super Lynx military helicopter designed to serve in the battlefield utility, search and rescue and anti-surface warfare roles. Its intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities are significantly upgraded and It can be housed in a frigate, offshore patrol vessel or corvette ships
“Currently wala pa (none) Wala pa tayong (We don’t have) scanners, walatayong (we don’t have) equipment that can detect underwater vehicles within our territorial waters, and these helicopters would be equipped with sensors that can detect underwater vessels and can manage or, and can engage if needed, – Philippine Navy
Now the question still remains if the current Duterte administration would be willing to use these new military assets against China’s encroachment? Or will it be used only for patrols in the Eastern seaboard of Luzon perhaps to serve as an entertainment vehicle for Bong Go and Baste.
PNOY cared so much about protecting the West Philippine Sea and these new assets were supposed to be used for self-defense purposes
It’s really sad that despite PNOY’s great efforts to resist China’s illegal encroachment of the West Philippine Sea came to a dead-end as the new administration under Duterte simply wants to give China whatever it likes. Even to the point of giving away our jobs and letting it get away with environmental atrocities in the West Philippine Sea where its coastguard protected fishing locusts pound coral-reefs and harvest giant clams out of the water.
Sadly, the Filipino people don’t really appreciate the works and the efforts that he’s done for the country. And until now Duterte’s propaganda machine continues to put him in the negative light so they can justify all their dealings with China by saying that it was PNOY’s fault. But it wasn’t.
I hope that by this May 13th. The Filipino people will make a firm stand by choosing Team Pilipinas over Team China.
