Extrajudicial Killings,  Netizen Speaks

Nurses laughed and stared at a drug suspect while he bleeds to death

A viral video circulated in Facebook showing a man drenched in blood writhing in pain on what seemed to be on a hospital bed. There was no sorts of apparatus attached to him nor were they any staff or doctor who tried to pacify him. From the background you can hear the medical staff were busily talking to each other and even laughed at the suspect in minute 0:01:02 and 0:01:03. Though as reported by Sunstar that the medical staff gave him intravenous, antibiotics and Lactated Ringer’s fluids to preserve his vital signs. However, there seems to be no signs of ”intravenous” having been given to the drug-suspect. It all appears that the medical staff was just staring blankly at the man waiting for him to succumb to his wounds and die.

Nanlaban? or Tokhang?

In a report published by Sunstar Cebu. Tuburan police desk officer PO3 Achles Bacorta said that the suspect  resisted arrest during a drug bust led by SPO4 Samuel Cañete in Barangay Poblacion last Feb. 8. Casas allegedly pulled out his gun after he noticed he was dealing with a police officer pretending to be buying shabu from him. However, what made this very suspicious is that during the altercation he was shot multiple times from the face, cheek, chest, left arm, shoulder and leg. Why would the police shoot the suspect on many parts of his body? A bullet wound on his face would surely be enough to take him down.  Doesn’t look like ‘Nanlaban’ to me. It looks like the police themselves really has all the intention to butcher this man down.

The video has since been posted by a Netizen Marie Thérèse Sevilla garnering two-thousand likes and more than three-thousand eight-hundred shares.

Is the growing culture of impunity intoxicating the minds of our medical practitioners now?

What is becoming apparent is that despite assurances of the hospital management that the suspect did received treatment and was taken care of however the video clearly does not even show this. It shows that the suspect was just helplessly writhing in pain while the medical team stared blankly him. As if, waiting for the moment that he will succumb and die from his injuries. Here’s the transcript fo the conversation as caught in the video.

Male Voice: shouting: AYAW BANGUN! (Don’t get up!)
Female voice: Di na nakatobash oi. Nisukul ka paman gud (He doesn’t understand anymore. Nanlaban ka pa kasi)
Male Voice: Ayaw sigig luhag (Stop moving)
Female Voice: Da uy, manglaba ko ani uy (I will do my laundry, giggles)
Male Voice: Danag naman na padung (he is almost dying)
Female Voice: Unsay danag ba? (What is danag?)
Male Voice: mumbles
Female Voice: Ah lage, basin maulina na basta padung na (Ah yes, he might recover if he is about to go)
Female Voice: Di naman ni kaabot, sigeg bleeding (He will not make it, he is bleeding nonstop)

Many speculated that the medical practitoners themselves may have been hardcore Duterte supporters and that their lackluster intention to save the man’s life were hampered by ideological contradictions. Why would they save a drug-suspect lives? When their beloved President want’s to butcher them?

Since Duterte assumed office in 2016. There’s been hundreds of extra-judicial killings in Cebu. It is as if the streets were all awashed of blood. And it’s dark alleways have become grisly scenes of police brutality to the poorest of the poor and the powerless inhabitants of the province. The culture of mass-murder, butchery and insensitivity creeps to overwhelm societal norms. Where it’s becoming normal not to feel ‘pity’ on any suspected drug-offenders even if they may have been just a victim of impunity. No one cared.
